Lenin is shaving when a boy comes up to him and asks him for some candy. Lenin's response is to slap the boy in the face, and he runs off crying.
Someone tells him that that was cruel, and Lenin replies, "No, it was merciful. After all, I could have hit him with the hand holding the razor."
Variants have Lenin ruining a nearby child's playtime (having him sent home, popping his football) as a more merciful alternative to having him arrested or shot.
